Circus Rambles - On Doctor Who

I'm big on disclosure, so here it is: I do not watch Doctor Who. I have never been interested in watching Doctor Who. My knowledge of the show, its canon, and its fandom are minimal at best.

So with that out of the way, let's talk more controversy!

From what Twitter tells me, the latest outrage sweeping the nation is the fact that the Thirteenth Doctor is going to be female. Specifically, played by Jodie Whittaker, an actress I am not familiar with. Literally the only thing on her IMDB that I recognize is Black Mirror.

So that's a thing now. Okay. So here's my reaction: Why is this a big deal? Yeah, it's a bit different. So?

I did a little digging, and the Doctor Who canon has in fact established that it is possible for Time Lords to regenerate into either gender, although they tend to favor one. Specifically, the two episodes that bring this up are The Doctor's Wife and Hell Bent. The prior confirms that Time Lords can change genders while reincarnating, and the latter shows the process.

So...The Doctor reincarnating into a female is a thing that can happen. It's a thing that they've previously established. It's now a thing that's happening.

...Why are there people freaking out over this again?

I mean, yeah, it's different, and people don't like change. But that doesn't seem like a good enough reason for people to get this upset. Could it be that there's a deeper reason behind why so many people are upset about this?

You know, I haven't seen one comment expressing concern that Jodie Whittaker is not a talented enough actress for the role. I have, however, seen a number of comments like the above, and for some reason they seem to be under the impression that Jodie Whittaker is a woman and thus has ruined Doctor Who forever.

I wonder what's really bothering people about this casting decision.

You know, I'm not saying you HAVE to be happy about this. Maybe you don't like Jodie Whittaker as an actress; maybe you do like her but think she's wrong for the role. Fine! You can have your opinion, and you can stop watching the show if you want to. But no matter how you feel about it, it's her role. She auditioned for it and was accepted, and that's that. Comments about political correctness have no place here, and comments hoping that a character gets raped just because they had the audacity to be female are never okay, not for any reason.

So in conclusion: CHILL THE FUCK OUT. Please. I highly doubt that the casting choices of Doctor Who are going to have much effect at all on whether or not the world ends.
