Circus Rambles - On things everyone else seems to like

September 3, 2017

I occasionally refer to myself as a contrarian, but I don't really set out to dislike things just because they're popular. I'm generally willing to give most things a chance to impress me. Somehow, though, my interests tend to be...misaligned with the popular norm, let's say. There are a number of popular things that I just haven't gotten around to yet, like Stranger Things (which I hear is very good) and Rick and Morty (which I also hear is very good although apparently there was some kind of controversy recently I'm not really sure I just read Twitter). And there are a number of popular things that I just, for whatever reason, didn't like. Because I'm weird! I'm different! I'm...fuck I don't even know what I am. I'm just rambling. That is literally the whole point of a series called Circus Rambles, after all.

So for your amusement, here are some things that everyone else seems to really like that I do not feel the same way about.

1. Star Wars

I'm not much of a science-fiction fan. My only exceptions thus far to this have been the anime Noein and the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Now before you get all up in arms and declare me a dirty Trekkie who just hates Star Wars on principle, I'd like to clarify that that has nothing to do with it. There are plenty of people who like both, after all. And I don't hate Star Wars; I just don't find it particularly interesting. I haven't seen very many of the films, but I wasn't really that drawn in by what I have seen.

2. Supernatural

I've always jokingly described this show as an excuse to torture two hot guys for the amusement of an audience, but thinking on that a little more, that's exactly what it feels like to me. Conventionally attractive or no, I'm not particularly drawn to either of the leads, and maybe that's why I never really got into this show.

3. Grey's Anatomy

As a hardcore Law & Order fan, I don't really feel like I have a leg to stand on when I call Grey's Anatomy an unrealistic show. Hell, I liked the first few seasons of House, and those are certainly not realistic either. But I think I have the same problem here that I do with the CSI franchise: there's changing some things to make it more interesting, and then there's ignoring so many real-life rules in an allegedly real-life show that it gets irritatingly distracting.

4. True Blood

The only clip of True Blood that I have seen is a clip involving two men in a hotel room flirting with each other, and the conversation ends with one of them saying, "I hear the water in Arkansas is...very hard." And then they make out, but it turns out it was a dream. This clip did not make me particularly eager to watch the show. Also, I'm not very into vampires in general. Also also, I have lived in Arkansas and I have no idea what the heck they were talking about in regards to the water.

5. South Park

This one I'm really not sure about. I think the creators are really talented, and I think the show tackles some heavy topics in a way that makes them accessible to lots of people. I just...really don't like it. It grates on my nerves every time a friend of mine puts it on. Who knows?

6. Chocolate

...no really. The food. I don't like chocolate.

And with that, I leave you with the impression that I'm just a weirdo who doesn't like anything. (It's not true, I promise.)
